Do not collect during an acute infectious illness. Wait at least 4 weeks from colonoscopy or barium enema before beginning the test. If taking antibiotics or antifungals – or taking beneficial flora supplements (acidophilus, etc.) or consuming food products containing beneficial flora(e.g. Activia®) – it is recommended that you wait at least 14 days after your last dose before beginning the test (unless instructed otherwise by your physician). There may be times when you healthcare provider prefers that you stay on one of these agents (e.g. acidophilus) in order to evaluate its effectiveness. Follow your healthcare provider’s recommendation. Eat your usual diet during the 2 - 3 days prior to the stool collection.
Description:
The Microbiology Analysis evaluates stool for beneficial bacteria, imbalanced gut flora, yeast, and possible pathogens. Beneficial bacteria are organisms typically found in the healthy human gut that have effects both locally and throughout the human body. An impaired or imbalanced gut microbiome has been associated with intestinal and other chronic diseases. The Microbiology Analysis stool test provides actionable clinical information for the development of personalized treatments to help restore intestinal microbial balance. Using a non-invasive, at-home stool collection, the Microbiology Analysis employs proven culture techniques and sophisticated MALDI-TOF technology for rapid identification of cultured organisms. The Microbiology Analysis evaluates for the major beneficial bacteria, as well as for additional bacteria and yeast that may have the potential in some circumstances to be opportunistic or known pathogens.
Analytes Reported:
Bacteriology Culture, aerobic Bacteriology Culture, aerobic x 3 Bacteriology Culture, anaerobic Yeast Culture
